Thank you for your interest in contributing to here-there! Before filling out our Participation Interest Form, please see below for some commonly asked questions:
Who can participate?
here-there welcomes the stories of anyone who self-identifies as both Asian (East, South, Southeast) and Canadian.
What does my participation require?
Each participant is asked to submit a 2-15 minute audio recording in English structured in our “pass-it-on” format. No professional audio equipment is required – phone recordings are welcome.
Participants are also asked to share a few personal descriptors, including: first initial, age, city they consider home, and ethnic identity. These answers are displayed publicly with each audio submission to provide additional context that may help listeners connect more deeply with each story.
What should I talk about in my recording?
Your recording must begin with a response to the question asked by the participant immediately prior to you. Following this response, we encourage you to delve into anything about your diasporic experience that you feel passionate about or want to discuss. The recording ends with a question of your choice for the following participant.
Is my information kept confidential?
Knowledge of participant personal information is limited to here-there organizers and stored in a local password-protected database. However, as participant voices and personal descriptors may disclose participant identities, participant confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.
All prospective participants will receive a copy of our consent form, which details the process of submission, participant approval, and publication.
What are some potential risks of participation?
Some potential risks associated with participation may include the discomfort of revisiting personal memories and sharing your lived experiences with a large audience. If any of these risks arise and you are in need of support, we’ve compiled a list of accessible Canadian mental health resources here.
Why is my participation important?
Your contribution to this project may enhance public awareness of the diversity and nuance of the Asian Canadian experience. It may also contribute further to your own understanding of your diasporic identity.
